The flexibility of managed IT services

Flexibility. It might not be the first term you think of when you consider your technology, right? But the truth is, it fits.

Hear us out.

As we’ve covered in previous blogs, your technology services can be handled in a couple of ways, first by keeping the staff and technology itself in-house. The second, by outsourcing this work to a subject matter expert vendor. OK, that’s some flexibility, sure, but not really what we’re getting at.

Let’s look at the latter example and assume you’ve agreed your business doesn’t have the time, money and energy to consistently maintain and update your IT systems. Because of that, you’ve decided to outsource this work to a vendor. This contract is now called a managed service, and it is through this managed service that you really enjoy that flexibility.

A managed service allows you to determine which services your vendor will provide for you. Need your vendor to manage the system, provide cutting-edge cloud access to your employees, and save your workplace time and space? Done. Need their expert opinion on a server issue or technology challenge? They can help with that as well.

But what if you have an issue arise that you can handle internally? Do you contact your vendor? You don’t have to, and that’s where you can gain some real, flexible savings.

Managed services are a pay-as-you-go model, meaning you are literally paying your vendor for the actual service they provide, not some empty retainer. Because of that, it also means you have control over just how much you pay your vendor based on how many services you solicit from them.

If an issue arises and your team can handle it themselves, let them. You don’t have to worry about paying your vendor for a service you aren’t using. Your team has just saved you money and eliminated a headache at the same time. Sounds like a wonderful, flexible solution.

Consider a managed service for your technology

If you’re a small- to medium-sized business, you know how important it is to control your costs without sacrificing your offerings. Managed services accomplish both goals by allowing you to determine the pieces of your environment you need help with and hand that off, while still managing those pieces you have true expertise around. It’s the best of both worlds, and in today’s business climate, nothing supports your goals for future growth like a little extra flexibility.
